Thacher School Hill Dormitory
Student & Faculty Housing
Ojai, CA
Embodying the larger aims of The Thacher School,
this new residential complex enables students and faculty to live and learn together in close proximity to nature. Indoors and outdoors are linked via breathtaking views, native materials and plantings, and covered outdoor walkways instead of enclosed hallways. Turning numerous site challenges to advantage, Communitas accommodated a centuries-old oak and accentuated a sloping site with a terraced central courtyard.

St. Andrews Presbyterian Church
Grace Chapel Renovation
Newport Beach, CA
The 200 seat Grace Chapel
was designed in the 1970’s with white pews, ice blue carpet and a formal and unyielding character. Over time, the use of the Chapel became limited as it was so formal and inflexible to accommodate changing worship and study needs. COMMUNITAS was commissioned to create a “dynamic reverential” atmosphere that would serve the new and intimate worship ministry Northeast of the Well, while still accommodating formal worship including memorial services. The Chapel is now welcoming, warm and easily reconfigurable. The heritage stained glass is now integral with the space and the brick and wood finishes are accented by the natural light and continuity of the adjacent courtyard plaza.

Cal State San Marcos
Campus Master Plan
San Marcos, CA
Roberta Jorgensen, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C
has been responsible for the
Campus Master Planning
since the 305-acre site was purchased in 1988. The site is extremely hilly, and the plan and design reflect that of a European hill town. A second Master Plan was developed by Roberta Jorgensen in 1997 to accommodate new educational goals, enrollment projections, and funding priorities. Currently, we are developing a third Master Plan in anticipation of the Campus’ growth to 25,000 students.
